Dahlia Tuber Ordering & Shipping Information
Many people are surprised to learn that dahlias are a tuber-producing plant! Tubers are generally sold individually or as whole clumps. Dutch producers and some larger American producers typically grow dahlias from seeds or cuttings, which produce smaller plants that are then dug up and sold as entire clumps. Many small American farms grow their dahlias from individual tubers, harvest them for fresh cut flowers after a full growing season, then dig up the plants and split the clumps into individual tubers, to be grown again next year. Because the plants are allowed to reach full maturity, they tend to produce much larger tubers than Dutch-style clumps, which lead to more robust plants with more productive stems and larger blooms. All of our dahlias are grown from and sold as individual tubers!
Size and shape may be different from variety to variety, but we guarantee that all of our tubers will be healthy and have viable eyes (though eyes are not always visible when the tubers are shipped).

Care and Growing Instructions:
Tubers should be planted after last frost, when there is no risk of freezing temperatures. Here in Massachusetts, Memorial Day weekend in a traditional planting weekend. Plant dahlias 18" apart, in full sun. Avoid overwatering for the first week or two after planting -- tubers may be prone to rot at this stage! Begin a regular watering schedule once shoots are visible, increasing as weather warms and plants become larger. For the healthiest plants and most prolific flower production, keep fully clear of weeds and competing vegetation, and mulch as soon as all shoots are clearly visible. Stems should be pinched when the plant is 12" high, to stimulate additional side shoots and increased flower production. Dahlias should be trellised at 12-16".
